Observation of photon recoil effects in single-beam absorption spectroscopy with an ultracold strontium gas

نویسندگان

چکیده

We report on observing photon recoil effects in the absorption of a single monochromatic light at 689~nm through an ultracold $^{88}$Sr gas, where frequency is comparable to natural linewidth narrow-line transition $5\mathrm{s^2}\, ^1\textrm{S}_0 - 5\mathrm{s}5\mathrm{p}\, ^3\textrm{P}_1$ strontium. In regime high-saturation, profile becomes asymmetric due photon-recoil shift, which same order as linewidth. The lineshape described by extension optical Bloch equations including momentum transfers atoms during emission and photons. Our work reveals simplest single-beam setting, significant relevance other applications such saturation spectroscopy, Ramsey interferometry, imaging.

Imaging the evolution of an ultracold strontium Rydberg gas

Clouds of ultracold strontium 5s48s S0 or 5s47d D2 Rydberg atoms are created by two-photon excitation of laser-cooled 5s2 S0 atoms. The spontaneous evolution of the cloud of low orbital angular momentum (low) Rydberg states towards an ultracold neutral plasma is observed by imaging resonant light scattered from core ions, a technique that provides both spatial and temporal resolution. Evolution...

Observation of quantum-measurement backaction with an ultracold atomic gas

Current research on micromechanical resonators strives for quantum-limited detection of the motion of macroscopic objects. Prerequisite to this goal is the observation of measurement backaction consistent with quantummetrology limits. However, thermal noise currently dominates measurements and precludes ground-state preparation of the resonator. Here, we establish the collective motion of an ul...

Observation of Feshbach resonances in an ultracold gas of 52Cr.

We have observed Feshbach resonances in collisions between ultracold 52Cr atoms. This is the first observation of collisional Feshbach resonances in an atomic species with more than one valence electron. The zero nuclear spin of 52Cr and thus the absence of a Fermi-contact interaction leads to regularly spaced resonance sequences. By comparing resonance positions with multichannel scattering ca...

Two-photon photoassociative spectroscopy of ultracold Sr

We present results from two-photon photoassociative spectroscopy of the least-bound vibrational level of the X 1 g + state of the Sr2 dimer. Measurement of the binding energy allows us to determine the s-wave scattering length a88=−1.4 6 a0. For the intermediate state, we use a bound level on the metastable S0P1 potential, which provides large Franck-Condon transition factors and narrow one-pho...

Photoassociative spectroscopy at long range in ultracold strontium.

We report photoassociative spectroscopy of 88Sr(2) in a magneto-optical trap operating on the 1S0-->3P1 intercombination line at 689 nm. Photoassociative transitions are driven with a laser red detuned by 600-2400 MHz from the 1S0-->1P1 atomic resonance at 461 nm. Photoassociation takes place at extremely large internuclear separation, and the photoassociative spectrum is strongly affected by r...
